Legacy Trails Volunteer Program

The Legacy Trails Volunteer Program is Wild Alabama’s hands-on stewardship program focused on maintaining, restoring, and improving trails across Alabama’s public lands. Through organized workdays, volunteers help protect natural resources, improve trail sustainability, and ensure safe, enjoyable access for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Legacy Trails volunteers take on meaningful projects such as restoring trail beds, addressing erosion, improving drainage, brushing back overgrowth, clearing trail obstructions, and rehabilitating impacted areas. Much of this work is done using traditional, human-powered tools—including crosscut saws, axes, loppers, hand pruners, and folding saws—especially in federally designated Wilderness areas where motorized tools are not allowed.

This program is a great fit for anyone who enjoys working outdoors, learning practical stewardship skills, and making a real difference on the ground. Whether you’re brand new to trail work or already experienced, you’ll be part of a supportive team dedicated to caring for Alabama’s trails.
Volunteers interested in learning to safely use traditional tools and build advanced trail skills can receive training through Wild Alabama’s Traditional Tools Training Series, which offers opportunities throughout the year to develop confidence, technique, and safety practices in the field.

Together, we’re protecting wild places—one trail at a time.
