Maggie grew up playing in the streams and woods of north Mississippi. She first experienced Wilderness with backpacking trips in the Cheaha Wilderness when she was living at the base of the mountain and teaching at the Alabama School for the Deaf. Her property in Waldo is surrounded by the Talladega National Forest and so that was her neighborhood. She moved to the Bankhead National Forest in 2004 to run the educational programs at Camp McDowell. She retired from the position of Dean of Education there to come help to protect, preserve, and educate about Alabama's public Wild Places!
