Wild Alabama has received a $25,000 grant from the National Wilderness Stewardship Alliance to enhance the trails in Sipsey Wilderness. This funding will address trail blockages caused by fallen trees following recent floods and storms. Utilizing the Survey123 app, hikers and volunteers identified these obstacles, prompting action.
The grant will support Wild Alabama's Helping Hands Program, mobilizing volunteers for over 1,000 hours to clear trails using manual tools like crosscut saws and axes, in compliance with wilderness area regulations. Collaborating with Alabama A & M students in the upcoming fall, the organization aims to achieve several goals:
This initiative is part of the National Wilderness Stewardship Alliance's 2024 NFS Trail Stewardship Partners Funding Program, supported by the USDA Forest Service. Across the United States, 16 organizations have been awarded a total of $215,600 to improve and maintain 920 miles of national forest trails. Non-profit partners will coordinate efforts with the Forest Service, mobilizing over 2,250 volunteers for 39,000 hours of trail stewardship activities, amplifying federal investments by $1.66 million in cash and in-kind contributions. To secure this grant, Wild Alabama must contribute a 15% cash match.
